Primary Peritoneal Cancer

Primary peritoneal cancer is a rare form of cancer that develops in the layer of tissue that lines the abdomen, uterus, bladder, and rectum. Typically, symptoms resemble those of ovarian cancer, although peritoneal cancer can occur anywhere in the abdomen.

Symptoms include:

  • Bloating or swollen belly area
  • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
  • Pelvic or lower abdominal pain; the area may feel "heavy" to you (pelvic heaviness)
  • Vaginal Bleeding that occurs in between periods

Digestive Symptoms

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Unexplained back pain that worsens over time
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Constipation
  • Indigestion
  • Lack of appetite
  • Increased Gas

Treatment for peritoneal cancer depends on the stage and size of the cancer, as well as the patient’s age or health. Typically, surgery is needed to remove the disease, and can involve the removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus. Chemotherapy may be used to treat the remnants of the disease.
