Benign ovarian tumors are noncancerous growths that start in the ovary. While they are made of abnormal cells, the tumor will not spread to other parts of the body. The cause of benign ovarian tumors is unknown, but obesity, infertility, and early menstruation are believed to increase the risk.
Surgery is usually needed to remove the tumor, and in severe cases, the ovary may need to be removed. Usually, once the tumor is removed, it will not grow back.
