Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids, also known as fibromyomas, are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. Uterine fibroids do not typically cause symptoms, but if they do,

Symptoms include:

• Heavy menstrual bleeding
• Prolonged menstrual periods – seven days or more of menstrual bleeding
• Pain or pressure in the pelvis
• Frequent urination
• Difficulty emptying your bladder
• Constipation
• Backache
• Leg pains

Uterine fibroids are not associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer, and almost never develop into cancer. Treatment is rarely needed, but in some cases, can require surgical procedures and medication to shrink or remove fibroids if symptoms are severe.
